Company History of Steinbeis Mechatronik GmbH

The foundations for mechatronic drive systems development in Ilmenau were laid in 1992 by Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Eberhard Kallenbach – who was head of the drive tech-nology department at the Ilmenau University of Technology at the time – with the establishment of the Steinbeis Transferzentrum Mechatronik.

The aim was to convert the research findings of the university into the high-tech products of tomorrow, and in doing so significantly increasing the level of product innovation and competitiveness.

1992 - Foundation of the STZ Mechatronik

In 1992, Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Eberhard Kallenbach founds the Steinbeis Transferzentrum (STZ) Mechatronik, one of the first transfer centres to be established in the former East Germany following reunification.

2004 - Receipt of the Löhn Award

The STZ Mechatronik receives the Löhn Award, which recognises projects that make an out-standing contribution to business and science through the transfer of knowledge and technology, for the development of an air impulse valve designed to increase engine performance.

2005 - Relocation to Steinbeis House

The company moves its headquarters from the Technologie- und Gründerzentrum (TGZ), Il-menau, to the new Steinbeis building.

2008 - Foundation of the SIZ Magnetic Engineering

The foundation of the Steinbeis Innovationszen-trum Magnetic Engineering leads to the further expansion of pure research competency in the area of electromagnetic drive systems.

2010 - Foundation of Steinbeis Mechatronik GmbH

Steinbeis Mechatronik GmbH is founded to con-tinue and build on the highly successful mecha-tronics work being done in Ilmenau, with a focus on the implementation of industrial projects.
